Leonard (R-DeWitt) said in a Facebook video, “I am running to be Michigan’s Attorney General to defend the innocent, the vulnerable, the hard-working people of this state, who aren’t looking for special deals or political favors—just their honest shot at living a better life.” He is running on a platform of making Michigan safer and stronger, according to his website.
Tom Leonard has been Michigan’s Speaker of the House of Representatives since January of this year. He has served as state Representative from the 93rd District since 2013, and cannot seek reelection due to term-limits. He had previously been Assistant Attorney General and a Genesee County prosecutor.
Speaker Leonard is the second Republican candidate for attorney general; he joins Senate President Pro Tem Tonya Schuitmaker in the race. Patrick Miles and Dana Nessel are declared Democratic candidates for the position. Unlike in the gubernatorial election, there is no statewide primary for attorney general. Delegates to the state party conventions will vote on the candidates in August of 2018.
